I started this thread to make sure all the new people coming to RootzWiki don't try to flash the old versions of cm4dx. A lot has been fixed in the nightlies since the first release so it's best to install the newest nightlies. If you install the old version, you will only be asking why things arent working correctly.

Install method from synik4l and razorloves

[CM4DX] Official nightlies released by CyanogenMod (Link to ROM thread)
NOTE: This rom only works on the froyo kernel, so you must be on a .340 froyo rom to flash this rom. If you're already on one, skip to step #3.
  • 1. Flash the .340 (froyo) sbf file. IF YOU DONT KNOW HOW TO FLASH A SBF CLICK HERE. AND READ THE GUIDE. I SHOW YOU HOW TO FLASH THE FROYO SBF, PREPARING YOU FOR THE REST OF THE INSTALL
  • 2. If you bootloop after doing the SBF, perform the following. Pull the battery for 30 seconds. Boot into stock recovery by holding the home+power and then once the exclamation point is shown on the screen press the search key. Then select the wipe data option.
  • 3. Use z4root found here, to root your phone.
  • 4. Place the newest nightly, found here, on your sdcard. As well as razorloves all in one fix, found here. Also google apps, found here, or u can download it and install it from rom manager later on. You can find it under google apps in rom manager and you will always have the newest one that way. either route works.
  • 5. Install d2bootstrapper found here. and reboot into clockworkmod recovery
  • 6. Once in clockwork recovery, format system and wipe data and cache. Now you are going to flash the 3 zip files you placed on your sdcard using the install from sdcard option. First do the newest nightly zip. Then do the gapps zip. Lastly, do razorloves all in one fix zip.
  • 7. Reboot the phone once finished.
  • 8. Install gapps from rom manager, if you didn't do it in step 6. ALL DONE!
  • NOTE: It's also good to install the newest clockwork recovery from rom manager. Picking the option "Flash Clockworkmod Recovery" and then Droid X(2nd init). So that way u can use rom manager to see future nightlies. Or u can also still download them straight to your phone from the mirror i posted before.
[CM4DX-GB] Unofficial nightlies released by RevNumbers (Link to ROM thread)
NOTE: This rom only works on the gingerbread kernel, so you must be on a .596 or .602 or .605 rom to flash this rom. If you are already on one of them, skip to step 3.
  • 1. Flash the .596 or .602 or .605 (gingerbread) sbf file. IF YOU DONT KNOW HOW TO FLASH A SBF CLICK HERE. AND READ THE GUIDE. I SHOW YOU HOW TO FLASH THE GINGERBREAD SBF, PREPARING YOU FOR THE REST OF THE INSTALL
  • 2. If you bootloop after doing the SBF, perform the following. Pull the battery for 30 seconds. Boot into stock recovery by holding the home+power and then once the exclamation point is shown on the screen press the search key. Then select the wipe data option.
  • 3. Use one click root tool found here, to root your phone.
  • 4. Place the newest nightly, found here, on your sdcard. As well as google apps, found here, or u can download it and install it from rom manager later on. You can find it under google apps in rom manager and you will always have the newest one that way. either route works.

So that way u can use rom manager to see future nightlies. Or u can also still download them straight to your phone from the mirror i posted before.
NOTE: If you already have CM7 installed on your droid x and want to upgrade to the newest version, you have 2 option. You can use Rom Manager Premium to download and install it. Or you can download it using the link in step #4 above. Place it on your sdcard and flash it in clockworkmod recovery. It is recommended to wipe dalvik prior to installing a new nightly.

NOTE: If you are using the froyo kernel nightlies, please keep in mind that each time you update to the newest nightly, you will also have to flash the all in one fix again. You will have to continue to do this until the fixes are put into the nightlies, at which point we will let you know.

INFORMATION LINKS:Also razor and I will provide support here for problems pertaining to this install method. and if anyone has a different method, that worked well for them that is different than this lemme know. so that i can post both methods for peoples ease.

How do I go from nightly to nightly? Certainly I don't need to SBF each time, but if I download the latest zip from cyanogenmod.com can I just install it right over my current version in clockwork recovery? Do I need to wipe anything? Thanks.

Guide updated. Thanks
Yea, it will install right over the current one on your phone. Just wipe dalvik prior to installing a new nightly.

I am posting this because I have seen this asked a number of times across the cm7 based roms, but when exactly should you sbf? Its my understanding and experience so far, if you are on any froyo based rom or another rom that uses cm7 for a base you do not need to sbf. You should only need to sbf if you are coming from the monster gb leak or any rom that requires it, such as apex or liberty gingerbread. In my case I flashed cm7 over liberty 2.0.1, I then flashed liquid 2.3 after that, no sbf, just wiping data, cache, and dalvik.

-What I mean is: you should be able to switch between any froyo roms, cm7, liquid gbx, ssx, and justice without sbfing.
-If you are on the .596 gb leak, apex, liberty gingerbread, or aosp liberty, you will need to sbf.

If I am wrong, I apologize and please delete my post asap!!

Also I do have a question, after sbf-ing do you need to reprogram/reactivate your phone or is this not necessary?

Very true, instructions can be quite elusive for people.

And thanks for the response, I always reactivate but was wondering on the necessity of it.

Technically speaking, you can do what you said, but its recommended to sbf for best results.

You only need to reactivate your phone if it says it needs to.

also iv always been the type of person where completely wiping and starting new by sbf'ing on the Droid X just prevents weird stuff from happening. i just wrote this, this way because alot of people are having trouble because, they are installing the first version instead of running the nightlies. And i wanted to make sure no matter where they are coming from they wont have a problems and be the most up to date they can be.

Thanks for the clarification and the great guide. I just acquired a Droid x and will be rooting and romming it tonight so having everything here will make it easy.

And sorry if I didn't post my question in the appropriate thread. Those were the observations I have made and was looking for confirmation or correction. Thanks again!!
