the odexed 'myfiles' apk zip doesn't show up in the launcher after you install in recovery. the deodexed version works just fine with the deodexed rom
Well, your task manager problems are because the jobmanager.apk is removed. Same with the touchwiz stuff, You must flash the add-ons. As for the issue flashing the add-ons, are you sure you are using the correct add-ons? You must use odex add-ons if you used the odex rom, and deodexed if you used the deodexed rom.Im having a problem, no matter what I try, I cant get any of the add ons to work. Ive tried wiping everything and installing the rom and then all the addons before reboot, tried wiping then installing the rom, rebooting and then going back to recovery and wiping cache/dalvik and flashing another add on one by one, and also tried wiping then flashing the rom, wiping again, flashing vvm, wiping again, flashing touchwiz, wiping again... etc, then rebooting. nothing works, rom was stable all day but when I hit task manager the phone freezes for a minute, screen goes off and then all is well, also no touchwiz widgets, or calendars or anything... what am I doing wrong?
the ROM is to be installed/flashed via CWM recovery. Isn't that how you did the ROM you're using now? You are likely better off to do a full wipe prior to flashing... and of course its a good idea to have a nandroid backup available.Hi everyone,
This forum is great and I appreciate naerok for hooking all this up.
I'm a noob, really want to know more about customizing my phone, and really like this barebones setup.
How do I install this on my phone? Is this something I can use odin for? My phone is already rooted, but the ROM (kernal?!) i'm using is really unstable.
Sorry for all the basic questions, but I'm trying to learn!
THANKS!
Thanks, drdrewdown...so, Clockwork (which I've seen mentioned on several forums) is a ROM/kernal flashing application? Seems to make sense... I take it, it'll let me flash ROMs from an SD card? Thanks for the clarification on .zip's versus .tar's...and you're right. I flashed a .tar file onto my phone using ODIN to gain root access. So to use this barebones ROM, i need to first install CWM and flash the ROM using that? sidenote: Whats the difference between a ROM and a kernal?the ROM is to be installed/flashed via CWM recovery. Yes.

Yes. Samsung phones store the recovery inside the initramfs of the kernel. To use CWM you must flash a kernel with CWM support. If you don't already have it, you'll likely wanna find an ODIN option. After this you'll be able to use clockwork as your recovery.
sidenote: Whats the difference between a ROM and a kernal?
A kernel is basically the middle man between a ROM and the hardware. It connects the application software to the hardware to make it work.
I'm going to look into nandroid, because I use my phone for business and have quite a bit of software on it that took a lot of time to configure. Will nandroid back up the apps and related data/settings?
Nandroids will back up anything you want, from boot, to system, to data. However, it won't touch modems. So yes, your app data and settings can be backup up, and restored.
THANKS FOR ANSWERING ALL THESE QUESTIONS!!! I'm trying my best to get to your level with this stuff...![]()
I got ROM Manager and have paid for it now, but I will definitely take your advice and be careful with it.There is also a free app in the market that will back up all your user apps and data. It can also backup, uninstall and freeze bloat and other system apps. Do NOT try to restore system apps between different ROM's though.
Also, Clockworkmod is a recovery. There is a recovery built into every Android device, just the stock recovery is very limited. You can somewhat control Clockwork recovery from an app in the Market called Rom Manager, but I highly recommend not using Rom Manager. It is too easy to flash something that hasn't been updated and soft brick your phone. Clockwork is a custom recovery for supported Android phones that more options than stock and gives you more control over your phone. It does not run inside the OS. It is a UI to help you flash kernels, ROM's, themes, mods, etc.
Check system/app with root explorer. Or if you have adb you can simply 'adb ls system/app'. If you see it filled with both apks and odex then you have your answer. If there are no odex files then you also have your answer.hypesteve said:got another question....(that didn't take long)...
So, I downloaded and installed the "odexed" version of the ROM, but when I go into About Phone, it says i'm using the non-odexed version...could that just be a typo?
