What does rooting your phone mean? Is that when you unlock it from a carrier that you have a contract with so that you can sign up with prepaid service? that's what I'm trying to do with my Galaxy 9 plus phone that is attached to an AT&T contract. Can anyone help? Thank you in advance.

You cannot use your old SIM to go from a contract to prepaid, or prepaid to contract. You would have to change SIMs and with that change phone numbers. Prepaid phone numbers cannot be moved from AT&T to another carrier, nor moved to a contract. Rooting, while very difficult on your Samsung, would not change this. AT&T looks at your IMEI number and what provisions are activated on your SIM. Presently, I don't think they'll do it anyway, as they are about to switch over to 5G. As of right now, only phone with 5G abilities are allowed on the network. Older phones are grandfathered in until Feb 2022.
