Hi Guys,

I just a Captivate from from a fellow xda member.

The phone is already rooted with superuser installed.

Now I want to install CWM on it manually (not through ROM Manager, coz I like to do it manually).

I am trying the method posted here http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Captivate:_Full_Update_Guide

The drivers are installed and when I try to Hardcore's SpeedMod Kernel I get error -12 from Heimdall Suite.

For me the 3 button download mode does not work, volume down + up and then attach usb cable works.

I am on UCKB1. Recovery 3e

Questions -
Do I need to apply the 3 button fix? from what I have read I do not need to,
How Do i fix the 12 error, I have rebooted my machine and the phone as well.

and flashed via Odin. 3e recovery replaced with CWM :android-smile:

so were u on 2.2 and just used odin to flash that file and it ended up with cwm on it? so then did u flash cyanogen straight from that? cus my buddy has a captivate and i wanted to put it on there for him. also how did u get to 2.2 cus hes still stuck on 2.1

Well i bought the phone from an xda member and it was on 2.2.
yes i just flashed the above mentioned file from Odin and it was got CWM.
Regarding CM , havent flashed that yet, planning for Cognition over the weekend.

Also, before flashing the file I did, you need to check if you can go into download mode or not, some captivates have the 3 button combo disabled (even mine had it), the other way is to turn off the phone, press volume up and down and plug in usb cable (already connected to PC) and you are in download mode. There is a 3rd way also to go into download mode which I cant remember as of now, can you please check xda for that.

ya thx for the response man. ya im 100% sure i can get his phone into download mode....cus see i tried to update his phone to 2.2 one poker night. while i was drunk. and i did it with a cord that had a loose connection. so in the middle of the update it failed. at the time i knew nothing about odin. so he was freaking out. i told him let me hang onto it for the night and come back over, once he woke up. being that it was already 5:30 in the morning. and id have it fixed for him. sure enough i found out about odin 10 mins after he left. and fixed it. lol. but u dont wanna try CM out?

As they say do not try to update your phone when you are High, remember what happened to Mr. Nilay Patel from engadget when he was trying to update his Moto, turned it into a brick ..and then was bricked by Android users for his pathetic article ..lol

Regarding CM, well I am already running CM on my N1 and Spica , so want to try something else on the Captivate, am a big fan of MIUI but personally I hate them for not being open source ;(

But once the weekend comes am sure I will try 4-5 ROMS on the Captivate ...

Cognition was good ..but I love MIUI ...rocks on the Captivate ..suggest you to install MIUI on your friends Captivate.

ya i was thinking that...cus he liked the look of the stock launcher and whatnot that the cap has....so i think i may let him try this out first...has anyone tried cyanogen for Cap yet?

I personally run Serendipity VII and love it. Threw on the TalonDev Kernel for the Voodoo color and sound. I love it. CM7 is nice on the Cappy, but you'll loose things like the Voodoo color and sound and other Samsung specific tweaks for media and sound playback, but CM7 seemed to be a tad bit smoother and faster.

So you can either have the slight performance increase and tons of tweaks from CM or the modified stock Samsung builds with IMO superior media playback and a few other Galaxy S specific tidbits. I recommend giving each flavor a try and showing your friend what each has to offer. Just make sure you follow the flashing instructions to a T, or you'll end up with bootloops for breakfast.
