Hey guys, my friend gave me his Droid Eris to fix for him, as I'm apparently the go-to phone guy around my area.. He said he never tried "hacking" (lul) his phone, and this just came up one day.

When I turn on the phone, no matter what, the bootloader screen comes up. I own a DX, so this whole bootloader concept is a fantasy. I'm assuming its that screen, because it says "DESIREC XC SHIP S-On" etc...

The buttons do not work, and the phone is frozen in this state. The radio is 2.42.01.04.27 if that means anything.

What can I do to fix this Eris? I've read about RUU's, and I guess that is the HTC version of SbF'ing?

Thanks a lot!

Is the screen white? And does it give you any options?

Have you tried the volume buttons? There should be some sort of menu with things like "FASTBOOT", "RECOVERY", "REBOOT", etc.

And yes, an RUU is like an SBF, except it's either an EXE that you run, and pushes a ZIP to the sdcard, or you can just put the zip there yourself, and the next time you boot into the bootloader, it should ask if you'd like to apply the update.

The normal options are there, the volume up/ down keys don't do anything. I've tried manually pressing them, pressing with a key, etc.. All I can come down with is that it freezes after the boot loading.

If you can, try flashing the PBXXX.IMG? (I can't remember the name of the image) and see if it takes. I had a similar issue of a water damaged Eris, and doing that solved it. If there is root, flashing the file will return it to stock without root, however I can't remember what it did for S-on or S-off, or if that is even an issue. Good luck!

These eris's had a defective trackball that sat way too close to the mini usb port. The usb port would heat the phone up during charging and the trackball would go out. After a while the whole phone itself would cease to work, like the volume buttons, screen etc.

I'm not saying it's that, i'm just wanting to point out if it is a hardware problem, it probably stems from that trackball. I turned in way too many phones to Verizon during the 8 months i had one.
