Have you set up the T-Mobile SIM yet? Or ported your number to T-Mobile? If so, you should be aware that any positive balance on your T-Mobile Prepaid account will disappear if/when you port that number to Google Voice since you would effectively be closing that account. If you haven't ported your number to T-Mobile yet and want to just port it directly to Google Voice and then forward GV to whatever random number T-Mobile gives you, you're good to go. Just keep in mind that the process of porting to GV *may* take up to 3 days for all the necessary SMS routing to be in place, though the voice routing seems to get handled much more quickly.
No, I'm still doing the StraightTalk deal right now. Probably wait till later this week or even next Monday when I got some time to sit and do all the stuff I need to on T-Mobile side.

How long does the # porting take to gv? I've been reading and people have been saying it took them almost a day and a half. Thoughts?
It should happen within about 24 hours, though it takes longer for the SMS routing to all get put in place... probably closer to 72 hours for that portion.

i went to port my # this morning (a few min ago) and it says...

Porting your mobile number to Google Voice is unavailable

Your mobile number can not be ported at this time.
- This number appears to be from an area we don't currently support for porting.

Damn!
Now what?
Yikes, that does suck
I guess from here your best bet is to just port it into whatever provider you're wanting to use (T-Mobile, wasn't it?).

i might be able to switch after all! i talked to a computer guy when i was selling my laptop and he said he was on GV from Sprint. is GV carrier specific? I wonder if I should just switch to TMO and then try to port the # over. what do you think?

Based on the error message you received, I think your number is the issue rather than your carrier. Here's what I would do:

1) Open up new service with T-Mobile, port your existing number onto this plan.
2) Sign up for a new Google Voice number (for free).
3) Set up the new GV number to forward to your carrier number.
4) Slowly start "encouraging" your contacts to use the GV number to get in touch with you.

Changing numbers does suck, but I don't see any reason why you should let that stop you from saving money with T-Mobile Prepaid.

when i went to TMO, i couldn't do the $30 deal like i wanted since i couldn't port my # over to GVOICE. so i went with the $70 plan so I could get at least 5GB of data/month. that plan has now been upgraded to UNLIMITED data :) and like you Phateless, i buy my own phones too. next up (in March) i'll get the N4 as a bday present to myself)

Assuming you can even get the Nexus 4... Seems supplies have been rather short, so finding a good one is kinda hard. And you know people will command high prices since there's a huge demand for them when they go up on Craigslist or something like that. I've not tried any here currently, but have a few plans to switch to T-Mobile maybe.

Rumor has it that the supply issues will be resolved by February - and T-Mobiles around the country should then have the N4 in store. Or you should be able to order from the Play Store again.
